Chill & Chat for Teens
Bi-weekly teen social skills group focusing on development and practice of social thinking, conversation skills, executive function, and mindfulness training led by Sheila Threndyle, Speech-Language Pathologist. Our skilled peer conversation coaches are a big part of our success. One hour sessions are held in local cafes, coffee shops, or the local community centre youth lounge and always include extensive individual and group practice. This group is suitable for teens with high functioning ASD and/or ADHD and/or social anxiety who are interested in learning and practicing the above skills with other teens. Though this group starts in early September, interested participants are always welcome to join.
FIESSTA (Friends' Interactive Executive Skills Social Training for Adolescents)
Pre-teen social learning and executive function day camp, back by demand:
Delbook Recreation & Community Centre, 851 West Queens Road, North Vancouver
This five day summer day camp for teens ages 11-13 with high functioning ASD, ADHD, and/or LLD is designed to teach high school survival skills. Evidence based research strongly supports peer coaching, and our outgoing students are responsible, supportive, and well trained as conversational social partners and executive skill coaches. Pre-teens will learn a variety of social, conversational, and executive function skills through interaction and practice. Some of the peer coaches themselves are successful and independent teens with ASD. High school success is largely based on proficient social and organizational skills. This camp focuses on helping teens identify their own EF (executive function) strengths and weaknesses. They then learn and practice strategies that promote working memory, self regulation, and metacognition. Daily outdoor exercise and mindfulness activities are just two of the habits we promote. EF and self regulation skills are critical for successful friendships and work experiences. Summer 2018 dates TBA.
